A quick trip through Montana just before Thanksgiving on Nov. 21 and 22 yielded positive results for the Northwest College women’s basketball team. The Trappers defeated Dawson Community College 74-57 in Glendive before defeating the Rocky Mountain College JV 82-51.

Kicking off the trip north the Trappers (6-3) went the distance to take on the Buccaneers (4-4).

Early on the Trappers built a multiple possession lead, holding a 12-7 advantage midway through the first quarter.

That grew to double digits before the end of the first quarter, with Northwest leading 25-15 heading into the second.

Both teams struggled to find the basket early in the second quarter, but Northwest still held a double-digit advantage until late in the half.

A 7-0 run over a 1:30 got the Buccaneers back in the contest, making it 32-29 with a minute remaining in the half.

Northwest responded, capped off with a Tyne Killip 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Trappers a 37-30 lead.

Out of the locker room Northwest carried that momentum, pushing the lead out via a 16-2 run and building a 53-32 advantage.

This time the Trappers did not allow the hosts to chip away at the lead, and Northwest held a 58-39 lead heading into the fourth.

Northwest held a lead as large as 22 in the game, and cruised to a 74-57 win.

The Trappers held a balanced scoring attack, with four players tying with 11 points led by Kamalani Anitielu who added 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Carolina Ruiz, Killip and Bianca Silva were the other Trappers with 11, as Silva also added four steals and assists and Ruiz added five assists.

Roxanne Rogers was the final Trapper in double figures with 10.

“It’s great to see because that means that they are feeling more comfortable and confident in our system, so I hope they continue to grow,” coach Lauren Davis said. “Having Tyne and Bianca back has been great. They both bring different qualities that help us on both ends of the floor.”

Northwest finished with the win despite more turnovers, holding Dawson to 27.4% shooting from the field.

Looking to finish 2-0 on the road the Trappers traveled to Billings, taking on the Battlin’ Bears (3-5).

Northwest used a strong first half to its advantage, building a double digit lead up 32-15 at the half.

The Trappers were able to continue cruising in the second half, finishing with an 82-51 win and extending their win streak to three games.

“I think it is a great confidence boost and it was great to get wins on the road. We hope to continue to build,” Davis said.

Anitielu led with 17 pounds just ahead of Rogers who had 16, Ruiz led with 10 points and five assists and Silva recorded five steals in the contest.

HOME STAND STARTS

Northwest will now get comfortable in Cabre Gym before the winter break, kicking off a six game homestand on Thursday (tonight).

That game will be against North Idaho College (4-5) at 5:30 p.m.

Northwest will then take on the Cardinals once again on Saturday at noon, hoping to complete a season sweep of North Idaho after defeating the Cardinals 92-80 during the opening weekend of the season.

Northwest will then play the next two weekends at home up until Dec. 16 before heading into the winter break.
