Fort Hall, Idaho, native Magic Smith and Romulus, Mich., grad Valdez Green both agreed to play ball in Powell. There are any number of reasons for fans, and Ward, to be excited about Smith. The 6'1” guard set an Idaho state tournament record in March by averaging 35.7 points per contest (to go along with 12.6 rebounds and 4.3 steals) while helping his team to a fourth-place finish in the three-day event. As eye-popping as that stat line might be, consider this — it actually represents a below-average performance during Smith's final prep season.Smith's senior year was nothing short of, well, magical. He averaged 36.7 points, 16.8 rebounds, 6.8 steals and 5.4 assists per outing while garnering all-state honors in Class 1A, Idaho's smallest school classification.“He comes from a smaller program, but he's a kid that knows how to play the game,” said Ward. “The numbers he put up are absolutely amazing, but what we really liked about him was how well he fit in with the returning members of our team when he came for a visit. You could see there was a chemistry there.”Ward describes Smith as a player capable of playing either the point or shooting guard position for Northwest College. From the small-school ranks of Idaho, the Trappers ranged to Michigan's largest school league to nab Green from Romulus High School near Detroit. “He comes from a very good high school program,” Ward said. “They reached the semifinals in Michigan's largest class state tournament this past season and he had an outstanding game in that contest. We loved the film we saw on him.”Green, according to Ward, will fill the Trappers' off-season need of finding an athletic wing player capable of shooting from the outside.“He's a bit undersized for a wing at 5'10”,” Ward said. “But he's so athletic that he makes up for it and he shoots the ball with tremendous range. He's also capable of taking it inside and going to get a basket when he needs to.”With the addition of Smith and Green, Northwest College's off-season signings are almost done. Ward notes the team will definitely sign one, and possibly two other players before wrapping up the recruiting process for the fall.“We need to find a guy that can help us out on the inside,” said Ward. “If we sign a second guy, at this point he'll probably be someone that can play inside for us too.”
