Panther relay team torches school record
The Powell High School girls’ 4x800 relay team shattered a school record that had stood for 22 years in Cody on Friday. The foursome of Desiree Murray, Kassey MacDonald, Sierra Morrow and Tally Wells carved more than seven seconds off the previous Powell best.
“They wanted to go after it today and they ran it down,” said Panther assistant track coach Tracy McArthur. “Running the girls’ race along with the boys’ helped because it gave them someone to chase.”
The Panthers’ winning relay clocked a time of 9:53.23, becoming the first girls’ relay team to break the 10-minute barrier at the distance in Powell High School history. To put the time in perspective, the winning time was more than a full minute faster than the state qualifying standard in the event and nearly 20 seconds faster than the Panthers’ 3A championship time at last year’s state meet.
The record-smashing run was the highlight of a runner-up finish by the Panther girls on Friday. In addition, the Panther girls gained an additional state qualifier at the meet. Freshman Shawnea Harrington inked her name on Powell’s state track travel roster with a throw of 36 feet in the shot put, almost two feet beyond the qualifying distance of 34-2.
Harrington placed second overall in the event.
Among other noteworthy performances for Powell’s girls at the four-school meet was a sweep of the top four spots in the 1600 meter run. Morrow, MacDonald and Wells all returned from their relay success and were joined by Tess Mitchell to rack up a host of points for the orange and black.
Morrow won the event with a time of 5:54.25. It was the Panthers’ only individual event win on Friday. The Panthers produced the runner-up finisher in seven events.
On the boys’ side, Powell finished just shy of 280 team points to out-distance rival Cody by 67 points. The two Park County schools hogged all but 86 of the team points handed out.
Senior Kyle Sullivan qualified in his fifth event, winning the 200 meters in a time of 23.21 seconds. Junior Josh Cragoe, lining up in the 400 meters for the first time in his career, bested the state qualifying standard by a full second to earn a spot in the field at Casper in that race.
Individually, the Panthers also received event wins from Zander Andreason in the 1600, Sullivan in the 110-meter hurdles and Jake Beuster in the discus. In a rarity, Powell’s Justin Lynn and Tyler McCauley were clocked in identical times of 2:12.39 in the 800 to share first-place honors.
Powell also won the 4x100 and 4x800 relays as the Panthers tuned up for regional competition with a meet roster that lacked some of the team’s top performers in their signature events.
Sullivan, for instance, sat out during the running of the 300-meter hurdles, an event he’s likely the favorite in once 3A competition begins in Casper in two weeks. Similarly, MaGill was not listed among the triple jump performers as the Panthers used the meet as a final regular-season tune-up.
The Panthers travel to Pinedale this Friday and Saturday for 3A West regional competition. The top eight finishers in all events plus any additional performances surpassing the state’s qualifying standards will advance to the state track and field championships in Casper.
The state championships take place May 19-21 at Casper’s Kelly Walsh High School.
