Tennis camp kicks off Monday at PHS

The tennis season is just around the corner, with the high school season kicking off a month from now on Aug. 7.

In order to prepare for the upcoming season the Powell Panthers alongside Cody will be hosting a local tennis camp kicking off at 8 a.m.  Monday at Powell High School. It's already drawn a lot of interest, as the camp was full the week before it was set to start.

A number of instructors will be in attendance, and will be primarily headed by Cody High School tennis coach Jason Quigley.

Also in attendance will be PHS coach Joe Asay, who is hoping to get as many kids out to try and build a strong base for the upcoming season.

“We are looking to give kids direction on how to be competing in tennis in the state of Wyoming and even further down the road,” Asay said.

Kids from middle school through high school are welcome to attend the camp.

The camp will cost $75 for all five days of camp, with the camp running 8 a.m.-noon each day apart from Wednesday, when the camp will be in the afternoon from 1-5 p.m.

Asay said that they have approximately 33-34 kids signed up currently, but is hoping more will come out to help grow Panther tennis.

“We will hopefully be developing some Panther tennis players,” Asay said.

He said this will also give kids the opportunity to see opponents they may compete against down the road — with the hope that this will not be the only time the players will see the court this summer with the season rapidly approaching.

“Hopefully this next week they spend on the court isn’t the only time spent on the court before the new season,” Asay said. “The fall season comes pretty quickly.”
