A Powell High School student was expelled for bringing a weapon to school last month,  but the school board accepted a modified agreement that will allow the student to re-enroll for the second semester. Following an executive session in a special meeting Nov. 23, the board voted to expel the student for one year, effective Dec. 8, but accepted an agreement modifying the expulsion that will allow the student to re-enroll on Jan. 3,  2011.

Under Wyoming High School Activities Association regulations, however, the student will not be allowed to participate in other school activities.

Park County School District No. 1 has a no-tolerance policy toward bringing weapons to school that calls for expulsion for one year in such a case; however, the administration has the authority to ask for a modified expulsion.

Superintendent Kevin Mitchell called the weapon a type-one weapon under school policy. He did not specify the weapon, but type-one weapons include firearms.

Mitchell said he recommended the modified expulsion because there were extenuating circumstances that he could not comment on.

The board voted in October to expel the student for one year according to school policy.

Mitchell said there was no connection between the two incidents and that the circumstances were entirely different in each case.
