Southside ranked among top 50 public elementary schools in U.S. by group

Southside Elementary School keeps shining.

The elementary school, whose motto is Southside Shines, recently was listed as one of the top schools in the country by TheBestSchools.org, an independent organization.

In its article “The 50 Best American Public Elementary Schools,” the organization listed Southside at No. 24 and called it an “A+ school.” Southside was the only Wyoming school on the top 50 list.

Southside Principal Scott Schiller called it a fun distinction.

“This year just happens to be a year where Southside Elementary School is being recognized not only for the great teaching and learning going on in our building, but we are also representing all of our schools, teachers and students in Park County School District No. 1 and the many outstanding things going on in teaching and learning in all Park 1 schools,” Schiller said in an email Tuesday.

Southside is a great school in a district made up of great schools and people, he added.

“We are fortunate to live and work in such an outstanding community,” Schiller said.

Southside earned the distinction of a National Blue Ribbon School in 2014, an honor given to only three Wyoming schools last year. It also was one of 59 schools nationwide to be named a National Title I Distinguished School in 2013.

“This is a continued recognition of the learning culture shared by the Southside community,” said Kevin Mitchell, superintendent of Park County School District No. 1, in an email.

Southside made TheBestSchools.org list by meeting the criteria the organization set, Mitchell said.

That included state assessment scores for students in third, fourth and fifth grades, as well as a variety of other information. Many of the schools on the top 50 list have earned the Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education.

Schiller said the organization also considered Southside’s ranking on other lists, adding that the school did not apply to be included in TheBestSchools.org’s article.

To his knowledge, this is the first local school listed in the top 50 by the organization, Mitchell said.
