So close: Panthers lose regional title on final event

Posted

It came down to the final event on Saturday in Worland — with the Powell Panther boys’ track and field team ending up on the wrong side of the scoresheet after a windy weekend, losing the 3A West Regional track title to Mountain View by one-half a point.

In that final event the Panthers came in leading 153.5 to 148 over Mountain View.

During the 4x400 Powell ended up finishing fifth and earning four points to make it a 9.5 point difference.

Lander was leading the race, but a failed baton exchange allowed Mountain View to catch up and pass the Tigers — helping the Buffalos win the team race after earning 10 points to make it 158 to 157.5 in favor of Mountain View.

“It was disappointing to come that close but every meet simulation I ran had us down between 20-25 points so I am really proud of the way the boys competed,” coach Scott Smith said.

Powell had a strong weekend as a team, winning four individual events and a relay.

Daniel Merritt won the 1600 meters (4:36.25); Isaiah Woyak won the high jump clearing 6 feet; Nathan Dupont won the long jump (21-8) and Cody Seifert won the triple jump (43-4 3/4).

The 4x100 relay team of Hyrum Jeide, Nathan Dupont, Simon Shoopman and Seifert won in 45.55.

Powell placed three of the top six pole vaulters, with Adam Williams getting second (12-6), Jeremy Harms (12-0) fourth and Wyatt Heffington tying for sixth (12-0).

Jeide had a strong weekend in the hurdles, placing second in the 300 meter hurdles (41.48) and third in the 110 meter hurdles (15.24).

Merritt also earned a second place finish in the 3200 meters (10:31.57), while Woyak was runner up in the triple jump (43-3) to Seifert.

Powell and Mountain View were comfortably ahead of the competition, as Worland (95.5), Lovell (94) and Lander (93) rounded out the top five.

STATE MEET

Powell’s season will wrap up this weekend in Casper, heading to Kelly Walsh to take part in the State Track and Field Championships starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Thursday kicks off with the 3200 meter finals alongside a mixture of field events.

Friday starts at 9 a.m. with the 800 meters alongside field events.

Saturday begins at 9 a.m. with field events and will be followed at 9:30 a.m. by the 100 meter hurdle finals.

“Mountain View, Torrington and Lander in the boys are looking very talented,” Smith said. “(We will look to) improve a bit again this week and bring home a lot of individual and relay medals. Then we will see where the team scores shake out after that.”

Powell will be looking to improve on its third place finish last year, expecting to be in the mix for a team title with Lander being the defending champions.

The Panthers will have competitors in every event except the 200 meters, 4x400 relay and discus.
