School bus driver to be charged with nine counts of reckless endangering

GILLETTE (WNE) — A Gillette school bus driver accused of harming four children when she sped through dips in an intersection last week will be charged with nine counts of reckless endangering.

The 25-year-old bus driver was on her route with nine students aboard last Thursday when, at the request of students, she allegedly sped about 30 mph through an intersection in the Harvest Moon neighborhood, hitting the divot in the road and hurting four of the kids.

One of the students was medically evaluated but none of the injuries appear serious, Police Deputy Chief Brent Wasson said.

Campbell County School District administrators contacted police about the incident late Thursday afternoon. They pulled the driver from her route after a student complained of the incident to a parent, Wasson said.

Students had apparently asked the woman to drive fast over the dips in the roadway, which she did with nine students on the bus.

Officers interviewed each of the nine students and met with prosecutors Tuesday, who decided to bring forward a reckless endangering count against the woman for each child.

Reckless endangering, which is a misdemeanor, charges that the person accused took action that put someone at risk of death or serious bodily injury.
