Salary increase amended for Park 1 school superintendent

Superintendent Jay Curtis’ salary increase of $2,475 was amended to a 5% increase of $8,290.16, at the June 14 Park County School District 1 board meeting. The superintendent’s current salary is $165,883.

Curtis’ salary was considered and approved in May with the 1.5% increase of $2,475. Board chairman Kim Dillivan says that while he believes the board acted appropriately with the information they were given, he felt he had not done enough due diligence at the time of the initial increase and wanted the chance to provide more data to the board.

“We had a chance tonight in executive session to look at some data to do some discussion. And now we have a chance to make a motion should anyone choose to do so.”

The increase was unanimously approved by present members Dillivan, Lillian Brazelton, Tracy Morris and Laura Riley, who attended virtually. Trustees Greg Borcher, Don Hansen and vice chairman Trace Paul were absent.

“I’m glad that we could correct this, not that this was an error but now we’ve done what we could do and needed to do,” Dillivan said.

Curtis addressed the board saying that he appreciated their consideration and hopes to “be the best for the best.”

The school board meeting also saw the second and final reading of administrative and operational procedures IHBA-IJL. These policies largely dealt with updates to special services policies such as updates to legal references.

Additional para-educator positions at the Powell Middle School that will be paid for by Emergency and Secondary School Relief II funds were approved in a formality. The plan for the ESSR II funds as a whole was approved unanimously earlier this year.

The school board’s July meeting, which will cover the upcoming year’s budget, is tentatively rescheduled for Monday, July 18.
