Records rewritten: More indoor track records broken before state

Posted

Indoor track records continue to fall for the Powell Panther program, as more individual records were broken at the Sheridan Invite hosted in Gillette last Thursday.

Two of those records came from Kinley Cooley, who broke the 1600 record set by teammate Kenna Jacobsen the meet prior, setting a new record by nearly six seconds with a 5:39.59.

That was good enough for fourth in the meet.

Cooley also broke the 3200 meter record, winning with a 12:14.43 to break the previous record by nearly 40 seconds which was held by Teo Faulkner.

“She ran a great race and it will really help her confidence going into state,” coach Scott Smith said. “I really am looking forward to what she will do as she had a lot left in the tank at the end of the race.”

Katie O’Brien continued to improve her record in the shot put, finishing second with a throw of 39-11 1/2.

Other top 10 finishes for the Panther girls included Jacobsen sixth in the 1600 (5:47.72), Karee Cooley third in the 3200 (12:40.41), Brynn Hillman sixth in the 3200 (13:05.72) and Myah Rakness seventh in the 3200 (13:25.46).

On the boys’ side, the highest placer came from Stuart Shoopman, who improved his 55 meter hurdle time to 8.43 to take sixth in a talented field.

“It has been great to see Stuart improve as he has been taking a college flying class that often conflicts with practice,” Smith said. “This week will be an exciting race with three of last year’s top hurdlers from outdoor competing in 3A.”

Other top 10 finishers for the boys were Sondre Furuhaug finishing seventh in the long jump (19-3 1/4), Colin Walker seventh in the 3200 (11:39.84) and Liam Taylor 10th in the 1600 (4:54).

“Sondre is a very talented young man and responds to coaching well,” Smith said. “Hopefully we will get to see it all come together for him in all of his events this week.”

That culminating event for the Panthers will be the WHSAA State Indoor Track Championships this weekend, taking place in Gillette on Friday and Saturday.

Field events will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and a majority of the track events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with both on a running schedule.

On Saturday field events will start at 8:30 a.m. and a majority of track events will begin at 10:20 a.m. on a running schedule.

“We are looking to bring home a lot of medals this week, both individually and in the relays,” Smith said.
