Powell Valley Healthcare announces interim CEO

Mike Lieb has been appointed as the new interim chief executive officer at Powell Valley Healthcare by HealthTech Management Services, the hospital’s management services company.

The hospital’s board of directors supports Lieb’s appointment and looks forward to working with him, according to a written statement signed by Board Chairman Dr. Mark Wurzel.

Lieb will serve as interim CEO while the board recruits a replacement for former CEO Paul Cardwell. Lieb will begin his new position on Oct. 10.

Cardwell resigned Friday, Sept. 23, then told the Powell Valley Healthcare board on Monday, Sept. 26 he wanted to come back. But Cardwell’s resignation already had been accepted by HealthTech. That decision still stood after extensive executive sessions between the board and HealthTech officials.

Lieb brings 19 years of healthcare management experience, including his recent interim positions with other hospitals in Montana and California, for which HealthTech also provides management services. Lieb also has held management positions for various hospitals in Texas.

“We are pleased that Mike has accepted the position as interim CEO,” Wurzel said in the release. “He has proven to be a highly-effective interim executive, and we look forward to benefiting from his expertise and leadership.”

Until Lieb’s official start date, HealthTech’s regional vice president, Neil Todhunter, will serve as chief executive officer. Todhunter also has extensive experience as a hospital executive. Prior to his position with HealthTech, he served as president at UPMC Northwest Hospital in Seneca, Penn. During his tenure, the hospital was named as a Top 100 Hospital by Solucient, now Thomson Reuters, for five years.

Powell Valley Healthcare includes a 25-bed critical access hospital, 100-bed long-term care facility, four medical office buildings and a 24-unit assisted living facility dedicated to providing excellent health care for Powell and the surrounding communities. The Powell Hospital District is governed by seven elected members of the Board of Trustees.

HealthTech Management Services, based in Franklin, Tenn., provides management support services along with administrative oversight that allows communities to maintain local control of their hospitals and focus on their main mission: promoting health.
