Powell High School senior Logan Mehling was recently named as one of the 2019 Wyoming 4-H All-State award winners.
Mehling was among five Wyoming 4-H seniors (ages 14-18) to earn All-State status.
He earned the opportunity to travel alongside the University of Wyoming Livestock Judging team to practice and represent Wyoming 4-H at contests in Kansas and Nebraska.
This year’s Wyoming 4-H 307 Livestock Judging Series involved 16 judging contests, with the final competition held in conjunction with the Wyoming State Fair in Douglas in August. The culminating event determined the year-end standings for the top judgers in each age division.
University of Wyoming Livestock Judging Coach Caleb Boardman recognized the top five seniors, five intermediates (ages 11-13) and three junior members (ages 8-10).
Addisyn Perkins of Big Horn was among those honored with All-State honors in the junior division.
“The series was started as a way for youth interested in livestock judging to have more opportunities to compete,” Boardman said in a news release last week, adding, “The more times we can get youth to mark cards, the better they will be.”
Over the 2018-2019 4-H year, Wyoming 4-H Extension Educators, Extension Specialists, Wyoming community college instructors and members of the UW livestock judging team joined forces as over 374 youth competed in one or more of the three fall contests, two spring contests, three camps or eight summer contests.
