A fire severely damaged a house on North Bent Street on Wednesday night, though the two people in the home were able to safely make it out of the residence.
The Powell Volunteer Fire Department was paged to 624 N. Bent St. at 7:24 p.m. for the structure fire, along with other fire responders.
When officers from the Powell Police Department and a deputy from the Park County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene, the front end of the home was engulfed in flames, but the two occupants were already outside. The light from the fire lit up the sky with an unnatural glow and sent up a pillar of smoke that could be seen from a distance.
Powell firefighters kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes. They had most of the visible flames knocked down by 7:31 p.m., then continued working on extinguishing the fire and cooling down the remains. As they worked through the house, they brought out a number of oxygen bottles; one reportedly ignited during the fire.
As for how the blaze started, "with the extent of the damage in the fire room, we don't have a definitive cause," Powell Fire Chief Cory Baker said late Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the home's occupants, a man and a woman, were checked out by Powell Valley Hospital EMTs at the scene. Police said the occupants found another place to stay on Wednesday night. Two dogs inside the home also made it out, police said.
Along with the fire department, ambulance crew, Powell police officers and sheriff's deputy who responded to the scene, a trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol helped control traffic on Bent and Sixth streets and a representative from the American Red Cross offered assistance, police said.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel were summoned back to the North Bent Street home around 12:15 a..m. Thursday, after the fire rekindled.
