Powell High School senior Stetson Davis, son of Paul and Candace Davis, is on the path to a military career after receiving all three nominations from Wyoming’s U.S. delegation, a rare accomplishment.
Davis comes from a military family, both his grandfather and father served in the Army. His oldest brother Jacob is currently serving the country as a Green Beret.
“That [service] means a lot to me,” Davis said. “Service is something that you owe to your country.”
He said he began his quest for a congressional nomination later than most. It’s common to begin the process in a student’s junior year of high school. Also uncommon is earning all three congressional recommendations, Davis said. He added the more nominations an individual is able to obtain the higher the likelihood they are accepted into a military academy.
Despite wanting to attend a military academy at a young age, Davis did not make the life changing decision until early into this school year after a friend at the Air Force Academy encouraged Davis to pursue the lofty goal. Davis’ friend and his friend’s father helped him through the process which involved filing applications and meeting with the legislators’ separate teams.
“I worked my ass off just to get [to this point] and I’m not even done with my academy applications,” Davis said.
Davis’ work is far from done; he now has to file applications for West Point and Annapolis by Jan. 21. Davis said that he decided to focus on applying to these two schools rather than turning in four applications that weren’t as strong. In order to finish his application process Davis must get medical evaluations in Billings and South Dakota. In addition to this he is trying to improve his already solid GPA and ACT score.
“I just got to keep in mind what my goals are,” Davis said. “I’ve always wanted to wrestle at a big school and this is a [Division 1] opportunity.”
If Davis is successful at earning a spot in an academy, not only will he have a Division 1 opportunity, he will fulfill his childhood dream of attending a military academy and serving his country, just like the Davis men before him.
