Powell High School Knowledge Bowl team places second

Powell High School’s team won second place at the 42nd Annual Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl amongst 16 teams from Cody, Lovell, Meeteetse, Greybull, Burlington, Riverside, Rocky Mountain, Ten Sleep, Thermopolis and Worland.

Teams were made up of four students in grades nine-12 along with alternates. Some schools had multiple teams. Powell’s team consisted of Ethan Cearlock, Kalin Hicswa, Sydney Spomer, Kik Hayano and Daniel Merritt.

Lovell won first place, effectively keeping their winning streak from last year, said Powell team adviser Amy Moore. She said Powell had a first round lead but Lovell pulled ahead after the third round to reclaim the title.

During the all day event at Burlington High School, students had to answer four rounds of 60 questions. If they hit the buzzer to answer a question they had only 15 seconds to answer correctly.

“This was a fun group to advise. My specialty is art and literature, so I did my best to telepathically communicate the answers, ‘Emily Dickenson is the Belle of Amherst, Dan Brown wrote ‘The DaVinci Code,’ and ‘The Kiss’ is by Rodin,’” Moore said. “But I couldn’t have correctly answered the broad range of questions they did. I was quite impressed by the well-rounded knowledge of our team.”
