A dominating pair of games for the Powell Pioneers had the team winning 17-0 and 16-0 over the visiting Buffalo Bulls on Wednesday, May 31, as Trey Stenerson threw a perfect game and the Pioneers gave up only two hits the entire evening.

POWELL 17, BUFFALO 0

Gloomy overcast skies threatened to rain out the opening game but the weather skirted around Powell for the Pioneers (13-12) and the Bulls (1-11).

Stenerson struck out two of the first three batters to set the tone for Powell.

Brock Johnson doubled to lead off for Powell, and Cade Queen drove him in with a double of his own to make it 1-0.

Walks to Aidan Wantulok and Dalton Worstell loaded the bases, and Aiden Greenwald cleared them with a double to make it 4-0 Powell after the first.

Stenerson struck out two of three once again in the second for another perfect inning.

Ryan Cordes walked to lead off the second and Johnson tripled to score him — while Johnson scored on the same play on an error to make it 6-0.

Jhett Schwahn singled to get on, and stole second during Queen’s at bat.

He scored after tagging up on a fly out to make it 7-0 after two.

Three more outs kept the perfect game going for Stenerson after three.

A Worstell single led off the third, and Greenwald drove him in with another double.

Greenwald stole third during Cordes’ at bat, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-0 after three.

Three more up and down for Stenerson kept him perfect after four.

Queen walked to lead off the fourth, stole second during Stenerson’s at bat and scored after a Wantulok single.

Wantulok stole third and later scored on a dropped third strike that got Worstell on base.

Greenwald was hit by a pitch and Cordes walked to load the bases once again.

Johnson and Schwahn were hit by a pitch to bring in two more before a Queen double cleared the bases to make it 16-0.

A Stenerson single brought in Queen and that finished the scoring for Powell.

Stenerson finished the perfect game in the fifth, ending with six strikeouts.

“I was glad to get him back out and throwing,” manager Jason Borders said. “He threw well with his command since he hadn’t thrown in awhile.”

Queen led the way with five RBIs, followed by Greenwald with three, Johnson with two while Schwahn and Stenerson had one apiece.

POWELL 16, BUFFALO 0

In the second game Powell was unable to get on the board until the second inning as the clouds started to clear.

A Stenerson triple got things started before Worstell drove him in to make it 1-0.

Worstell stole second before Kolt Flores was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.

Cole Fauskee was walked to load the bases, and Worstell scored on a passed ball during Johnson’s at bat before the inning ended on a pop out with Powell up 2-0.

The no-hitter by Flores was broken up by a single in the third, but Powell was able to get out of a jam to keep it 2-0.

“We gotta find out where we are with him [Flores] with him being out a year injured,” Borders said. “He threw well so that worked out too.”

Ethan Welch reached on an error to start the third, and Queen was hit by a pitch to put two on.

Queen was out at second on a fielder’s choice during Stenerson’s at bat, but Worstell walked to load the bases with one out.

Caden Diaz was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, Stenerson scored during Flores’ at bat on a passed ball and Flores hit a double to make it 6-0.

Flores advanced to third and Fauskee walked to put runners on the corners with two outs.

Fauskee stole second during Johnson’s at bat, and Johnson drove in both to make it 8-0.

Johnson scored on an error after he stole second to extend the lead out to 9-0 after three.

Schwahn came in to pitch the fourth inning in relief for Flores.

He gave up no hits, and Powell extended its lead in the bottom half.

Stenerson hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Worstell singled, Diaz walked and Flores was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Worstell scored on a passed ball and Schwahn was walked to reload the bases.

Fauskee doubled to score a pair, and an error on Johnson’s hit scored another to make it 14-0 with runners on the corners and no outs.

Queen walked and Worstell singled to score one, before Diaz capped off the scoring with a single to make it 16-0.

Schwahn gave up a hit in the fifth, but capped off another shutout for Powell.

Johnson led the way with three RBIs, Worstell, Diaz, Flores and Fauskee each had two while Stenerson had one RBI.

Powell split a doubleheader with the Sheridan Jets (8-7) on Sunday — losing 6-4 before winning 13-3.
