Ceremony set for FridayA trio of athletic squads from Powell High School will be recognized when a new set of state championship banners is unveiled in the PHS Gymnasium. The banners will commemorate the recent state titles won by the girls cross country team, the volleyball team and the wrestling team.According to PHS activities director and assistant principal Jeff Jones, the ceremony will take place between the varsity girls and boys basketball games with Kemmerer Friday evening. The girls game is slated to begin at 5:45 p.m. and the boys game has a 7:30 p.m. start time. Jones said the actual unveiling of the banners will take place sometime around 7 p.m.Two of the three banners to be included in the Friday ceremony were earned during the fall of 2008. PHS's girls cross country squad, led by head coach Cliff Boos, became the first athletic team to secure a state title for the new school on Oct. 25. Shortly after and on Nov. 1, PHS's volleyball team capped its stellar season by winning the Class 3A crown during the state tournament in Casper. The title run, which was directed by head coach Cindi Smith, was the school's first volleyball state championship since 1987.The wrestling banner that will be unveiled Friday was earned by head coach Nate Urbach and his Panther wrestling squad during the 2007-08 season. Their state title was the school's first in wrestling since 1987.An additional banner will be added in the PHS Gymnasium Feb. 20. On that date, the speech and debate team's banner will be unveiled between the varsity girls and boys games with Lovell. The start time for those events are slated for 5:45 and 7:30 p.m. and the banner ceremony is expected to take place sometime around 7 p.m. PHS's drama team also won a recent state title, but no date has been set for their banner ceremony. In other scheduling news involving PHS's sports teams, Jones announced this week that PHS will not make up a series of basketball games with Thermopolis which were canceled prior to the Christmas break due to winter travel concerns.“We tried but could not find a common time that would work for both schools,” Jones said.
