Sunshine, warm weather and a home crowd helped push the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team to a victory in the LA Kohnke Invite on Saturday — earning seven individual first place finishes en route to a 59 point team victory over second place Cody.
“I was very happy with the kids’ performances,” coach Scott Smith said. “We had great performances across the board for both boys and girls.”
Leading the way for the Panthers with three top two finishes was Waycee Harvey, who won the 100 meters (13.13), the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 11 1/2 inches, and placed second in the 200 meters (27.04).
Other individual winners on the day included Anna Bartholomew in the 400 (1:00.94); Kinley Cooley in the 3200 (12:18.22); Lauryn Bennett in the 300 hurdles (50.44); Sydney Spomer in the triple jump (32-6) and Grace Coombs in the discus (110-07) — with Coombs earning her first qualifying mark of the season in the victory.
“Seeing Grace automatically qualify in the discus was really nice,” Smith said. “She has been consistently improving and she had a very consistent series, which shows that her technique is coming together.”
Two more new Panther qualifiers were Megan and Kenna Jacobsen, who placed second and third in the 800 meters with times of 2:24.4 and 2:25.13 respectively.
“The Jacobsen sisters really came through with fast times in the 800 that set them up nicely, along with Anna Bartholomew, to qualify for the track classic in two weeks,” Smith said. “It is also a great evidence of how hard they and our distance group have all been working.”
Powell had one relay victory on the day, with the team of the Jacobsen sisters, Bartholomew and Harvey winning the 4x400 (4:16.42).
Smith said he would like to thank the volunteers who helped work the meet, and the Powell Athletic Roundtable for helping put on the meet and supporting the kids in Powell.
LOVELL INVITE
Powell remains in the Big Horn Basin this week, taking a majority of the week to train before making the short trip for a 9:30 a.m. start Saturday in Lovell.
Smith said they hope to get a full week of training outside but hopes the team will be able to adapt to the weather as cooler temperatures are predicted for this upcoming weekend.
