Candidate filing period opens for general election

Park County residents preparing for next week’s primary election can find their polling place and review sample ballots on the county’s elections website. The site, located at www.parkcounty-wy.gov/county-elections, offers various information about the Tuesday, Aug. 16 primary — including campaign finance reports from local candidates and committees.

According to the reports filed with the Park County Elections Office, more than $120,600 has been spent on county and municipal races so far.

Interest in the election has been high. As of midday Wednesday, Aug. 10, more than 1,400 voters had voted early at the Park County Courthouse and about 1,600 voters had cast absentee ballots.

Unofficial results from the primary election will be posted to the county website as the results are tabulated Tuesday night. Those results are due to the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office by no later than 10:30 p.m.

It is not too late for county residents to register to vote or to update their registration. They can do so at their polling place on Election Day or when voting early at the Park County Courthouse in Cody (available through Monday, Aug. 15). Proper identification — such as a driver’s license, ID card or passport — is required.

Park County Clerk Colleen Renner is also reminding all registered voters to bring identification when they vote, as a new Wyoming law requires voters to show ID when voting in person. Accepted forms of identification include: a driver’s license or ID card from Wyoming or another state; a valid U.S. passport; a U.S. military card; a Tribal ID card; a student ID card issued by a Wyoming university, college or public school; or a valid Medicare or Medicaid insurance card (the insurance cards can’t be used for registration, however). Free Wyoming ID cards can be obtained at the Wyoming Department of Transportation Driver Services office in Cody.

While the focus is on next week’s primary, the elections office is already gearing up for November’s general election. Starting now and continuing through Monday, Aug. 29, individuals can file their candidacies for more than 60 nonpartisan positions on the college, school, hospital, fire, cemetery, conservation and museum district boards in Cody, Powell, Meeteetse and Clark.

Most candidates for partisan offices filed back in May, but there are still opportunities for candidates to join those races, too. In races that have no Democratic candidates on the primary ballot, a Democrat can join the race by receiving at least 25 write-in votes and an independent candidate can run after collecting a certain number of voter signatures by Aug. 29.

Meanwhile, the libertarian and constitution parties have until Monday to certify their candidates. The Park County Elections Office has already received notice that a libertarian candidate is joining the race for the Park County Commission.

Candidates who have filed are listed on the elections website.
