Chance to hear from state, U.S. Legislature candidates

After a handful of early school board forums in Cody and Powell, people will get a chance to see and hear from some of the general election candidates for state and U.S. House seats.

The Park County Democrats are hosting a candidate forum  Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Grizzly room at Cody Library. All congressional candidates have been invited.

U.S. House candidates Lynnette Grey Bull (D) and Marissa Selvig (C) have committed, but as of Thursday morning the Republican and Libertarian candidates have not responded, county Democrats president Jan Kliewer said. Republican candidate Harriett Hageman, the favorite for the seat after easily defeating incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney in the Republican primary, earlier announced she would not participate in any debates this fall.

“Lynnette Grey Bull hasn’t really had a chance to speak in this area, so I really wanted to give her the chance and for people here to hear her,” he said. “And Selvig is an interesting candidate, I’d really like to hear from her.”

Sergio Maldonado, Democratic candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will also take part.

Additionally, there will be two state candidates, Carrie Satterwhite (HD 50) and Kim Bartlett (HD 28), their opponents, Republican incumbents Rachel Rodriguez-Williams and John Winter, have also been invited, but Kleiwer said Rodriguez-Williams did not respond and Winter declined the invitation. Rodriguez-Williams, whose district covers rural Powell, Ralston and part of Cody, ran unopposed in the primary — as she had two years before — but defeated an independent candidate in 2020. Winter’s district covers Thermopolis, Meeteetse and part of southeastern Cody. He likewise ran unopposed in the primary.

Kliewer said one candidate declined specifically because of the forum being hosted by the Democratic Party.

“We reached out to everybody,” he said. “I said, ‘we’re hosting this because nobody else is.’”

All are welcome to meet the candidates at 6 p.m. and formalities begin at 6:15. Paul Fees, a former state Legislature candidate, will moderate.
