Panthers look to resume action

Top-ranked soccer programs scheduled to appear this week A less-than-favorable weather forecast might be the opponent Powell High School personnel are most worried about this week, but visits from a pair of top-ranked soccer programs and a home track meet will give coaches plenty to think about on the field as well. After an extended layoff, partially due to spring break and partially due to, who else, Mother Nature, the Powell High School soccer teams are scheduled to re-take the pitch this Thursday against defending 3A boys' and girls' state champion Cody. The Bronco boys, last year's state champions, enter the contest undefeated and ranked first in the state according to the most recent WyoPreps poll. Powell was ranked third in the season's inaugural poll two weeks ago, but have yet to play a game since obtaining that ranking. The Panthers are sporting a 4-0-1 for head coach Pat D'Alessandro. A two-week layoff seems like small change for Brad Hammond and the Panther girls' soccer program. The Powell High School girls' program has yet to re-take the field since its season-opening jubilee appearance back on March 21. Should this be the week the Panther girls are able to resume competitive action, it will be a strenuous one, indeed. Cody, the defending 3A girls state champion, is scheduled to play a 3 p.m. game on Thursday at Trapper West Field. On Saturday, the Panthers are slated to do battle with current 3A number-one Jackson Hole in an 11 a.m. event. Boys varsity games are scheduled to follow on both dates. With current weather forecasts calling for two inches of snow accumulation before Thursday's scheduled start, it is less than clear whether the Panthers' will have a chance to test their mettle against rival Cody on Thursday. Saturday's forecast of partly sunny skies and temperatures rebounding into the upper 40s appears more conducive to outdoor athletic events. That's good news for Powell High School track coach Scott Smith. The Panthers' home track invitational is forecast to get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Through two meets this season, the Powell boys' track team has logged five advance qualifiers for May's state championships. The Panthers have also finished as the runner up in each of those meets. The Panther girls will look to build upon a third-place finish in Worland. Powell has one automatic qualifier on the girls' state tournament roster so far this season. Also in doubt for the weekend is Powell's scheduled spring golf tournament in Thermopolis on Friday. The Panthers are still waiting to take the course for competition this spring season.
