Tribune file photo by David Dickey Donarski wins title at 152After a short holiday break, the Powell High School wrestling team resumed its season at the Bozeman Invitational last Friday and Saturday. The Panthers, the lone Wyoming squad in the 33-team field, made the most of the trip and came away with a seventh-place finish. Also, PHS senior Trevor Donarski recorded the team's best individual effort by finishing first in the 152-pound weight class.PHS head coach Nate Urbach said prior to the event that improvement was the main goal for his Panthers in Bozeman, and that goal was met.

“We looked at this tournament like the one in Rapid City earlier in the season,” Urbach said. “The big thing we wanted to see was improvement. We also wanted to see how we could do against some of the best wrestlers from Montana. This has been a great tournament for us in the past, and it was as tough as I've ever seen it.

“Overall, I was pretty pleased with how the kids wrestled. Of course, there's always room for improvement, but I thought they did well against a strong field of competitors.”

In the team standings, Billings Skyview, the top-rated squad in Montana's Class AA, finished first. The Falcons, who tallied a tournament-best 253.5 points, edged first-ranked, Class A Havre by 12.5 points for the event's title. Claiming spots three through six and also finishing ahead of the Panthers were Glasgow (188 points), Great Falls (175.5), Belgrade (131) and Bozeman (125.5). PHS, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, tallied 125 points en route to its seventh-place effort.

As for the Panthers' individual efforts, Donarski's championship at 152 led the way. The senior posted an impressive 5-0 mark and earned the distinction of being a two-time title winner at the Bozeman Invitational. He also claimed first place in that tournament last season.

“Trevor's done a good job at getting better each year,” Urbach said. “He had a great season last year, and he's continued to improve. He's worked hard to become a more well-rounded wrestler, and that's really showing this season.”

Donarski capped his series of strong bouts by defeating Belgrade's Tucker Taylor 6-0 in the championship bout.

PHS junior Auston Carter also enjoyed a solid two days of wrestling and finished with a 5-1 mark, which was good for third-place in the 140-pound weight class. He clinched his strong placement in the individual standings by pinning C.M. Russell's Mitch Rorback at the 2:39 mark in the bout for third place. Carter's only loss was to Bozeman's Michael Carpenter in the semifinal round. Carpenter went on to win the 140-pound title.

PHS's remaining placers were freshman Olie Olson at 112 and senior Cody Kalberer at 160. Both wrestlers posted 4-2 marks.

“It was a really good tournament for Olie,” Urbach said. “Every weight class was loaded with talented guys, and he did a nice job against some really good kids. Cody also wrestled well. He lost a couple of hard-fought matches, but I thought it was his best showing in a tournament this season.”

Though they did not place, Urbach said the Panthers had a number of wrestlers put forth solid efforts last week. Among those who recored 3-2 records were Colt Nix at 125, Randy Andrews at 130, Cory Eden at 135 and Cole Kary at 145. Also gaining valuable experience in the upper weight classes were C.J. Simon at 215, Monte Nickles at 171 and Tyler Showalter at 189. Simon finished with a 1-2 mark, and Nickles and Showalter both went 0-2.

• Up next: The Panthers have just one competitive date this week, and that will be Thursday when they face Thermopolis in a dual meet at THS. The junior varsity squads are slated to face off at 6 p.m., and the varsity matchup is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thermopolis' varsity carries a No. 2 ranking in Class 2A.

“They've got a good team, and I know they'll be be stronger than what we saw during the tournament in Worland,” Urbach said.
