Dual homecoming weeks brought a homecoming dual in the pool Tuesday night in Powell, where the Powell Panthers defeated the Park County rival Cody Fillies 109-77 and earned two more state qualifiers in the process.

The night started out strong, with Powell winning the first three events.

Patricia Christensen, Aubree Fisher, Paige Thomas and Addy Powell started the night with a 2:06.02 in the 200 medley relay which was followed by a Kik Hayano victory in the 200 free (2:12.47) and a Kaitlin Diver victory in the 200 IM (2:29.84).

“Swimming is kind of an overlooked sport sometimes and I really enjoy all the support that our hometown can give us and all of the people here cheering us on,” Hayano said.

After a tight battle in the 50 free Addy Powell finished in second place with a 27.69, and Aramonie Brinkerhoff stepped on the board and claimed a win with a score of 181.1.

In the diving, Cody saw a new qualifier in Halle Robinson, which saw both teams cheer — Hayano said that speaks to the friendly atmosphere that surrounds swimming in Wyoming.

“It’s a lot of fun. Everyone in swimming is so kind and all the Cody girls are wonderful people so it is really friendly and really fun,” Hayano said.

After another tight battle in the 100 fly where the Panthers took second, third and fourth, Hayano came out on top in the 100 free (57.94) and Charlee Brence finished in first in the 500 free (6:04.97).

In that 500 free, Charlee’s sister Kathryn Brence achieved a state qualifying time (6:21.06) in second — which coach Bob Smartt noted makes all three Brence sisters who swim the 500 free have qualified for state.

After the 200 free relay in which the Panthers took second, the highlight of the night came in the 100 back where  Powell (1:07.95) claimed first, but added the two new state qualifiers in the process.

Emma Sapp touched the wall in 1:12.46 and Cassidy Reimer touched in 1:12.94 which earned both their first qualifying marks of the season.

That makes 16 qualifiers on the team out of 22 possible, something Hayano said the Panthers pride themselves on.

“It’s super important, as a team we pride ourselves on getting the highest number of qualifiers in the state. It’s a team pride and it’s really good for team morale with some of the girls that have never qualified can qualify and really support each other,” Hayano said.

Fisher claimed victory in the 100 breast (1:18.47), which was the final victory for the Panthers on the night to make the total eight out of the 12 events won.

WORLAND INVITE

Powell has reached the midway point of the season with the conference meet just a month away in Cody on Oct. 20 and 21.

“I think we are doing really well,” Hayano said. “All the girls are working super hard, we are getting personal bests and having a lot of fun this season.”

The Panthers head back on the road this weekend, making the trip south to take part in an invitational in Worland on Saturday.
