Panthers add qualifier at Meetster Bunny Invitational

Hop home for LA Kohnke Saturday

Sunny weather on Monday in Cody led to some strong marks for the Powell Panther boys’ track and field team — adding an additional qualifier in two different events.

That additional qualifier came in the form of Hyrum Jeide, who placed third in the 300 meter hurdles (41.85) and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.69).

“It was very nice to see Hyrum get qualified in both hurdles,” coach Scott Smith said. “He has had a nagging foot injury so we can spend time concentrating on running more and getting him less impacts from hurdling during the week.”

The Panthers had one individual event winner Monday, with Nathan Dupont claiming victory in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 4 inches.

“It was great to see Nathan come through and win the long jump,” Smith said. “He is a super young man that works really hard and it has been great to watch his rapid improvement.”

Other top finishes for the Panthers included a second place finish from Jace Hyde in the 400 (54.91), a second place finish from Daniel Merritt in the 1600 (4:42.43) and a second place finish from Cody Seifert in the triple jump (42-9 1/4).

Two additional top five finishes came from Simon Shoopman who took fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.07) and Caden Nelson also taking fifth in the 200 (24.82).

Overall the Panthers placed fourth as a team with 79 points, behind Sheridan (210.5), Cody (153) and Kelly Walsh (112.5), and just ahead of Worland (72).

LA KOHNKE SATURDAY

The Panthers will stay in Powell for the only home meet of the season, hosting the LA Kohnke Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Smith said 10 teams from around the Big Horn Basin will be in attendance, and with good weather predicted he hopes the team will set personal records in front of the home crowd.
