Panther swim picks up two wins

Team notches firsts in road competitions in Cody, Riverton

As the postseason approaches, Powell High School boys’ swimming is peaking at the right time. The Panthers completed another successful weekend, winning two events: Friday’s Cody Triangular and Saturday’s Riverton Triangular.

In Cody on Friday, PHS finished first in five of the 12 events.

Individual winners were Tarren Blackmore (200 individual medley), Cole Frank (1-meter six dives), Ru Parker (100 free) and Nate Johnston (500 free). The Panthers’ 400 free relay of Johnston, Parker, Francis Rogers and Blackmore also won with a time of 3:49.41.

In Cody, Powell picked up another state qualifier: Riley Schiller. The junior cut 7.65 seconds off his 100 fly time to qualify in that event.

Schiller took a break from swimming last year, and his performance in the 2020-21 season has impressed coach Jerry Rodriguez.

“Riley is one of the hardest working athletes on the team,” Rodriguez said. “He has been in the process of coming back from not swimming last year, and with swimming, sometimes an athlete’s best stroke may change over time. A lot of it is just figuring out how to do the stroke correctly and efficiently. “

Despite loading the bus at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, the Panthers were just as dominant in Riverton against the hosting Wolverines and Douglas.

This time, the Panthers finished first in seven events. Winners included Johnston (200 individual medley, 100 fly), Parker (100 free), Rogers (100 back) and Blackmore (100 breast). Powell’s 200 medley relay (Parker, Johnston, Warren, Blackmore) and 200 free relay (Blackmore, Rogers, Parker, Johnston) teams also placed first.

Rodriguez was similarly impressed with the squad’s performance in the 1-meter 11 dives, the first time Powell competed in the event all season. Powell’s four divers — Cole Frank, Ashtin Prentiss, Jon Hawley and Caiden Gehrts — finished second through fifth (in order). And in the 100 breast, Blackmore, Parker and Prentiss took the top three spots, all logging personal-best times.

The Panthers have steadily improved throughout the season, and Rodriguez expects this to continue in future events.

“We still have a lot of swimmers cutting time, so that means that we have not yet peaked,” the coach said. “The likelihood of even faster times at the end of the season, after tapering, is probable.”

The Panthers compete in two events this week. They head to Worland for a meet on Tuesday and will participate in a meet in Buffalo on Friday afternoon.

It has been a busy stretch for Powell swim, but Rodriguez expects it to pay dividends when the postseason arrives.

“We are tired as we head into the last part of the season, but the hope is that the training will pay off at the end at state in Laramie at the end of February,” he said. “It will.”
