To finish off April the Powell Panther girls’ track and field team shined through in the sunshine — putting in strong performances at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper on Friday and the Rocky Mountain Invite on Saturday in Cowley.

WYOMING TRACK CLASSIC

After five years of absence the Wyoming Track Classic made its grand return to Harry Geldien Stadium at Kelly Walsh in Casper on Friday.

The WTC is a meet that invites the top eight performers in track events and top nine in throwing events in the state to compete to see who is the best of the best before the state meet in just three weeks’ time.

The top three participants in each event receive medals for the meet.

Powell had multiple athletes break through and finish near the top, with Addy Thorington placing second in the high jump clearing 5 feet, 1 inch, and Anna Bartholomew placing third in the 800 meters (2:24.54).

“The meet was very highly competitive and it was great to see so many great performances from all of our kids,” coach Scott Smith said.

The Panthers had the most competitors in the 800  event with Megan Jacobsen also placing sixth (2:25.93) and Kinley Cooley (2:35.07) placing eighth.

Waycee Harvey broke under a minute in the 400, placing sixth in a competitive field with a 59.8.

Kenna Jacobsen placed eighth in the 1600 meters (5:37.74) and Cooley also placed sixth in the 3200 meters (12:35.54).

Overall 27 teams made the trip to Casper for the Friday evening meet, with the Panthers finishing eighth as a team with 25 points — 4A competition ruled throughout having the top five spots as Cheyenne Central won with 74 points.

For the girls, a couple of event records fell on Friday — Central’s Sydney Morrell broke the 1600 meter record (4:59.68) and Addie Pendergast of Sheridan broke the 400 meter record (54.25).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN INVITE

After several athletes competed on Friday, the Panthers turned their attention to the Rocky Mountain Invite on Saturday in Cowley.

Overall the Panthers had a strong day, winning 10 events at the smaller meet.

Event winners included Lauryn Bennett winning the 300 hurdles (52.61) and the pole vault (9-0); Bartholomew in the 200 meters (26.37); Kenna Jacobsen in the 800 meters (2:28.88); Cooley in the 1600 meters (5:40.3); Shelby Zickefoose in the 3200 meters (13:07.84); Thorington in the high jump (5-3); Ine Kolstad in the long jump (15-9); Harvey in the triple jump (34-8 1/4) and Grace Coombs in the discus (104-11).

Powell added three new triple jump qualifiers including Harvey, Sydney Spomer (33-10) and Kolstad (33-7 1/2) to give Powell four automatic qualifying spots in the triple jump in addition to Catelynn Floy who had previously qualified and also placed fourth on the day (33-6 1/4).

“It was great to see our girls compete so well in the triple jump and a great accomplishment for Waycee to hit such a big jump the first time she has done it in high school,” Smith said. “It just shows how talented that young lady is.”

The 1600 sprint medley of Audrey Johnson, Kolstad, Bartholomew and Megan Jacobsen won with a time of 4:31.24.

Powell had 26 top three finishes on the day, including the top three places in the 3200 meters, triple jump and long jump.

No team scores were kept for the meet.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON MEETS

Powell now has two final opportunities to earn pre-qualifying times for state before the regional meet in Worland in just under two weeks.

“These meets we will be down to making our final determinations on who will be entered in what events,” Smith said. “These two meets will be very helpful to help us make those decisions.”

The first chance will come on Thursday at 1 p.m., with the Panthers heading to Cody to take part in the Trackstravaganza.

Powell will then make a trip at 1 p.m. on Friday, heading down to Thermopolis to take part in the final meet of the regular season.
