Only about 500 acres of sugar beets remain in the ground, and there is hope they can be salvaged after wet snow and freezing temperatures stopped the harvest late Thursday and Friday, Oct. 26-27 in Western Sugar Cooperative’s Lovell factory district.
“They’re frozen, but growers are making an attempt to get them out,” said Ric Rodriguez, Heart Mountain grower and beet board member. “It looks like a slow warm-up this week, and there’s hope we can still do something with them.”
The frozen beets are generally in the Cody area, as well as some by Emblem and Lovell, he said.
“When they’re brought in, we’ll process them right way,” Rodriguez said. “They’re not a loss yet if we can get some sun on them. Growers need to bring them in clean.”
