Heading up to Bozeman, Montana, to kick off the second half of the rodeo season, the Northwest College Trappers brought home a few positives after placing fifth in both rodeos.
Overall, the Trapper men finished fifth with 230 points for the first rodeo on Thursday and Friday, while the women had 100 points to also finish fifth.
Leading the way for Northwest was the duo of Gunner Plenty and Mason Trollinger, who ended up second in team roping.
“They jumped into fourth place (overall) in the standings,” coach Del Nose said. “They have two more rodeos to qualify. They need to place deep in these next two rodeos to reach the finals (College National Finals Rodeo).”
Nicole Groeneveld was the sole Trapper to earn points on the women’s side, finishing the barrel racing in 30.24 seconds to finish third.
For the second rodeo, the Trapper men again finished in fifth place with 40 points and the women were unable to earn any points in the second rodeo.
“The kids have got the ability, I don’t know if it’s a mental game or what,” Nose said. “We’ve been practicing a lot but not being able to compete with these guys is beyond me.”
Zane Young won the bullriding after posting a score of 62 on the day.
The points earned by Young catapulted him into fourth place, just 60 points behind a qualifying spot for the CNFR, which takes the top three individuals and top two teams.
Plenty was the other placer, finishing seventh in tie down roping.
The Trappers will head back to Montana this weekend, for a pair of rodeos in Miles City on Thursday (today) that will conclude on Saturday.
“We are practicing right along and we are going to see what happens,” Nose said.
