Hope Lutheran Church in Powell recently treated international students attending Northwest College to a Midwestern-style meal.
Congregation members prepared the meal, baked apple desserts and made Lutheran Jello for the Oct. 27 event.
“At first several of the students were not interested in the Jello, but once some of them tried it, the Jello dishes were emptied,” said Pastor Donna Putney.
Carolyn Danko, who serves on the Northwest College Board of Trustees, demonstrated how to create a loaded baked potato and green bean casserole, because the dish is a tradition during the holidays for some families.
Approximately 30 students and staff attended the supper, along with 40 church members, who answered any questions the students had about living in Wyoming or America.
“It was so fun to see this intergenerational as well as intercultural activity take place at our church,” Putney said.
The church also gave each student a gift bag of goodies as a way to say welcome to the Powell community, she said.
