NWC gets funding boost from community, state

Posted

When Gov. Mark Gordon signed the biennium budget for the state after the recent legislative session, he approved a budget that included a line that will help the Northwest College Foundation in its goal to provide funding for the new student center.

While there is still a question as to how much money is eligible to be matched by state funds, it was certainly welcome news to NWC President Lisa Watson and Foundation Executive Director Shelby Wetzel.

Acceptance of the state match funds has already been added as an action item for the next college board meeting.

But it’s not just the state that has stepped up to fund the student center — so has the community.

Northwest College held another record Giving Day event, raising more than $175,000 — $38,000 more than last year — with $120,000 of that earmarked for the student center construction.

That money is only the latest to be donated — the foundation has received millions in private giving, putting it in a good position to receive matching funds.

So, while the state matching funds may help push the foundation’s student center funding drive over the finish line, it would be possible only because of how much the community of donors has provided.
