Conference meet this Saturday

A strong season for both the Powell Middle School Cub boys’ track and field teams rolled on in Lovell on Saturday — with the seventh grade team running away with the team title and the eighth grade team finishing in a close second to Cody.

The seventh grade team’s strong day was led in part by six individual first place finishes, along with three relay victories.

Individual winners for the Cubs were Keaton Bennett winning the 100 hurdles (17.52), 200 hurdles (31.69) and the pole vault clearing 9 feet, 0 inches; Cobey Khan in the 400 (1:01.82); Landon McDonald in the 800 meters (2:40.52) and Levi Cox in the shot put (30-1 1/2).

The 4x100 relay of Brayden Benander, Braxton Nelson, Santiago Gutierrez and Dylan DeBoer won in 54.29; the 4x400 relay of Orin Onstine, Noah Young, Cash Peterson and David Stearns won in 4:53 and the 800 sprint medley team of Benander, Tucker Muecke, Khan and Bennett won in 2:01.24.

“The seventh grade boys love track and love their events,” coach Zach Coombs said. “They are always pushing themselves and each other to improve. They encourage each other every day.”

The strong team effort allowed the Cubs to pull significantly ahead of the competition — finishing with 188 points total, 90 ahead of second place Cody.

The eighth grade Cubs also had a productive day, earning five first place finishes in Lovell.

Breckyn Kobbe was the only two event winner, winning the 200 meters (25.01) and the 400 meters (57.51); Garrett Lennon won the pole vault (10-6); Kaden Wolff won the shot put (40-8) and Brady Harvey won the discus (116-3 1/2).

“Brady and Kaden love to throw,” Coombs said. “They put a ton of time in over the summer by attending throwing camps. They are both technicians and students of the throw. They are great leaders and help coach their teammates.”

Coombs said they have shown great improvement and he is excited for their next two meets after a great week of practice.

The only relay win of the day came in the 800 medley relay where the team of Derrick Tucker, Tanner Seifert, Harvey and Mason Green won in 2:01.21.

Overall the eighth grade team finished second at the Lovell Invite with 141 points, just 15 behind winner Cody.

Powell now heads down to Thermopolis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday for the conference meet.

“We are hoping to bring home four conference championships,” Coombs said. “No matter what happens this weekend, this has been a great season for Powell Middle School track.”

Those who have earned the opportunity to compete will have another opportunity to prove they belong at the top after Saturday, with the Best of the Best Meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Lander.
