A sunny day allowed the Powell Middle School boys’ track teams to show their strengths Saturday in Cody — where the seventh-grade boys finished in first with 114 points, 62 ahead of second place, and the eighth-grade boys placed comfortably in second.

Keaton Bennett led the way for the seventh-grade Cubs in the hurdling events, sweeping both the 100 (18.52) and 200 (31.22) alongside winning the pole vault after clearing 9 feet, 0 inches, to earn a qualifying mark for the Best of the Best in all three events.

In the distance races the Cubs had two different winners, where Landon McDonald won the 800 meters (2:39.7) and Dylan DeBoer won the 1600 meters (5:34.51). DeBoer earned a qualifying time in his race.

Braxton Nelson won the high jump (4-9) and Levi Cox won the discus (74-5) as the final two individual winners on the day.

The relay team of Brayden Benander, Nelson, Tucker Muecke and DeBoer won the 4x100 (55.36).

Overall the Cubs added 11 marks for the Best of the Best at the end of the year, as they ran away from second place Lovell by 62 points.

“It was really great to see the athletes improving and getting better each week,” coach Zach Coombs said. “They have been working hard and it is starting to pay off.”

For the eighth-grade squad, Breckyn Kobbe led the way finishing first in the 200 meters (25.98), second in the 100 meters (12.47) and second in the 400 meters (57.03) while earning a qualifying time in all three events.

Broc Frank won the high jump (5-3) and earned a qualifying height, while Garrett Lennon won the pole vault (10-6) with a qualifying mark.

Brady Harvey was the final event winner for the Cubs, winning the discus (124-0) with a personal best mark to qualify.

Overall the eighth-graders added 13 qualifying marks on the day, finishing in second with 87.5 points — 30.5 behind winners Cody but 47 points ahead of third place Thermopolis.

Powell had a dual in Cody rescheduled from this week, and it’s expected to occur at some point next week. The Cubs will stay close to home this weekend, heading to Cowley at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to take part in the Rocky Mountain Invite.
