A man accused of stealing nearly $2,000 from a Powell hotel will need to post $10,000 in order to be released while his case is pending.
Former Super 8 employee Juan J. Medina is facing a felony count of theft, which alleges that he stole $1,999.23 in cash from the hotel’s lock box between November and December. Authorities obtained a warrant for Medina’s arrest on Jan. 17, but he wasn’t taken into custody until Monday afternoon. That’s when the 48-year-old turned himself in at the Park County Law Enforcement Center in Cody.
“It was difficult to find Mr. Medina,” Deputy Park County Attorney Laura Newton said at a Tuesday hearing in Circuit Court. “I do think that he is a flight risk.”
Newton asked for bond to be set at $10,000 cash. The prosecutor also requested that Medina be barred from contacting the Super 8’s owner and one of his former co-workers, and ordered to stay away from the owner’s other lodging properties in Cody. She noted allegations that Medina had made threats — prompting him to shake his head.
When it was his turn to speak, Medina noted, “I did turn myself in.”
Circuit Court Magistrate Brianne Phillips adopted the state’s bond recommendations without comment. She set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 23 to determine if the case can advance to District Court.
