Library’s ‘poker walk’ adds to alumni reunion schedule

Posted

Powell High School alumni weekend attendees have an added incentive to get reacquainted with the town they grew up in.

On Saturday morning, July 9, the Friends of the Powell Library invite returning alums to tour the downtown, while at the same time engaging in a “poker walk” to possibly win some money.

Participants acquire a poker “hand” by paying $5 to enter and then visit designated businesses to collect a card from any and all of eight businesses. At least five cards are needed for a hand. Each participating business will have two decks of cards to distribute the morning of July 9.

This is a new event. The participating businesses are some of the newer establishments in the downtown, and their locations form something of a circular walk. They are Humble Bee, Good Vibes, Queen Bee, Eternal Light, Heartworks, Rusty Skunk, Uncommon Grounds and Forgotten Treasures.

It’s a fundraiser on the part of Friends of the Powell Library. The participant who assembles the winning poker hand claims 50% of the entry money; the library gets the other half.

“I would certainly like to see everyone stop in and wander around the more established businesses as well,” said alumni board member Gerry Wilkins.

The library will begin taking sign-ups for the poker walk on Thursday, July 7 at the library. People can also sign up at the free alumni breakfast on Saturday morning at the American Legion Hall at 8 a.m. All hands must be turned into the library by 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9. The winner will be announced at the fairgrounds Saturday night.
