A memorial service at the Worland Elks Club Nov. 29 celebrated the life of former Powell resident Leonard C. Dooley, 67, who died Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Washakie Medical Center in Worland.

He was born July 19, 1936, in Powell to Benjamin Franklin and Naomi Rose (Henson) Dooley. He grew up in the Powell and Ralston-O'Donnell communities, and he graduated from Powell High School in 1955.

He was a standout athlete at Powell High School. He lettered in football four years and in basketball and track for three years. He was an all-conference performer in football and basketball and was co-captain of the football, basketball and track teams his senior year at PHS.

He received the prestigious Lee Blocking Award as a PHS football player.

He attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., on a football scholarship and graduated with a bachelor's degree in industrial arts in 1962.

Leonard met Nancy Aloise Brubaker in the summer of 1957 during Greybull Days of '49. They were married a few months later on March 9, 1958, in Worland at St. Alban's Episcopal Church.

After college, the couple moved to Worland where he worked on the Brubaker Ranch from 1963-1968. He worked for Geis Trucking from 1968-1973. He worked a short time for Dale Weaver Construction from 1973-1975.

Mr. Dooley then went into business for himself. He bought his own truck and leased to various companies, including Signal Drilling, Bunning Trucking and Richardson Trucking. He semi-retired in 1998 due to health reasons. In his retirement, he did work periodically for Dowell Schlumberger.

He enjoyed helping his family with all the ranching activities and could always be counted on to drive a truck, dock sheep or brand cows. He enjoyed spending time with his father-in-law and brothers-in-law on the mountain when they were herding.

He loved to visit, and he could trade the best of stories with just about anybody. He was a modest man about his own athletic abilities and rarely talked about himself. But he was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.

Survivors include his wife Nancy; son Mark (Becky) Dooley; daughters, Lynette (Elmer) Swing and Nikki (Adam) Martinez; grandchildren Dustin, Breanna and Dane Dooley, Sami and Bru Swing, and Navy Martinez, all of Worland.

For those who wish, the family would appreciate donations to Big Horn Federal Bank at P.O. Box 1239, Worland, WY 82401 for a memorial athletic scholarship.

Veile Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
