Dear Editor:
On Oct. 24, 1944, a Japanese Freighter, the Arisan Maru, was sunk while transporting 1,800 prisoners of war (POWs) from the Philippines to another POW Camp, possibly located in Taiwan. There were six POW survivors.
Among the POWs lost, nine were from Wyoming. American Legion Post 19 in Riverton has erected a monument honoring these nine men. The monument will be dedicated Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 — the 75th Anniversary of the sinking of the Arisan Maru — at Riverton Veterans Park.
One of the men, James S. McDonald, enlisted from Park County, Powell. I am attempting to locate any members of James’s family, to invite them to the dedication. I am asking for anyone with or knowledge of his family to contact me at emcausla@wyoming.com or 307-850-7224.
Thank you,
Edward R. McAuslan
