Rebound to beat LymanThe Lady Panthers basketball team's undefeated season was spoiled by Mountain View on Friday.Coming off the Christmas break, the Powell High School girls (8-1 overall, 3-1 in Class 3A West) fell 45-41 at Mountain View (10-3, 3-1) on Friday. PHS rebounded with a 54-40 win over hosting Lyman (3-6, 0-4) on Saturday.Against Mountain View, Powell shot just 27 percent from the floor (14 of 51), their weakest offensive performance of the season.After falling behind 9-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Panthers rebounded in the second to seize the lead. By half-time, PHS was clinging to a slim, 17-15 advantage.But the third quarter — as it has been for much of this season — was tough on PHS. Mountain View outscored Powell 14-8 in the period to claim a four-point lead.The teams matched each other with 16 points in the final period, allowing Mountain View to claim the four-point margin of victory.Senior Savannah Donarski led the Lady Panther offensive with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Leslie Thronburg followed with nine points.Also scoring for the Lady Panthers were senior Kami Cooley (6 points), junior Olivia Rogers (5 points), and senior Katie Kipp and junior Shellie Williams (2 points each).Mountain View held PHS senior Hannah Pollart to three points — well below her season average of more than 14 points per game.The Lady Buffaloes, who competed in Class 2A last season, have transitioned well to the higher class. The squad sports three players more than 6 feet tall.After beating Powell — who has been ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in WyoPreps' media and coaches poll — No. 5 Mountain View turned around and beat No. 2 Cody on Saturday, 52-41. Like Powell, the Cody Fillies had been undefeated going into their contest with the Lady Buffaloes.Powell didn't let their loss stick with them. On Saturday, the Lady Panthers took care of Lyman with a 54-40 victory.PHS forced a season-high 25 turnovers from the Lady Eagles, and, though struggling from behind the 3-point line, converted a healthy 50 percent of their 2-point field goals.Pollart led the Lady Panthers with 18 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Donarski, who had 10 points and nine rebounds.Also scoring for PHS were Thronburg (8 points), Kipp (6 points, 7 assists), Rogers (6 points) and Cooley (6 points).This weekend, Powell returns home, hosting Class 2A Rocky Mountain at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday and conference rival Lander at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.
