The Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team hosted Worland in a dual meet Thursday, winning 11 of 12 events, with 10 athletes earning 15 state-qualifying marks.

As a team, the Lady Panthers won the meet 99-79, though Powell didn’t receive team points for the final four events.

“So as to not run up the score, we marked our relays and individuals as exhibition in the last four events,” said PHS head coach Bob Smartt. “This has been a challenging year for Worland with the graduation of their two top athletes and with continuing pool problems. Worland has had to practice in a two lane pool that is very shallow and warm.”

Powell had 1-2-3 sweeps in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke events. Eight Lady Panthers won events, led by Anna Fuller with wins in the 50 and 500 freestyle.

Addison Moretti (200 free), Elizabeth Liggett (200 IM), Emma Karhu (diving), Rachel Kuntz (100 butterfly), Sydney Legler (100 free) and Lucia Harder (100 breaststroke) also claimed wins.

“All eight of these event-winning performances were in state-qualifying time,” Smartt said. “All told, 10 of our athletes achieved 15 state-qualifying marks, including Gabby Paterson [200 IM], Sidney O’Brien [100 butterfly] and Maddi Hackenberg [diving].”

Unofficially, Smartt said there were 25 personal bests set on Thursday; athletes who achieved personal bests in both of their individual events at the dual include: Katie Beavers (200 free and 100 back), Gabby Paterson (200 IM and 100 backstroke), Grace Sapp (50 and 100 freestyle), KayCee Twitchell (50 and 100 free), Hannah Hawley (50 free and 100 breaststroke), Sidney O’Brien (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke), Emma Mitchell (100 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Kami Jensen (50 free and 100 breaststroke).

Likely personal bests not listed in Smartt’s database were Natalie McIntosh in the 200 freestyle, Azurdey Burton in the 200 IM, and Kylie Kahl in the 100 backstroke.

The PHS swimming and diving team head to Cody today (Tuesday) for a dual with the Fillies; an invitational scheduled for Saturday in Worland has been canceled due to the pool issues there.
