The Powell Lady Panthers celebrated Homecoming and tuned up for their first conference match with a three-set sweep of the Greybull Lady Buffaloes in volleyball action.The more experienced Powell team took control early in game one and cruised to a 25-10 win. Powell jumped to an early lead again in game two and kept the lead throughout on their way to a 25-13 win, and matched that score in set three despite Greybull efforts that produced two short runs for the Lady Buffaloes.Coach Cindi Smith used the leads enjoyed by the Lady Panthers to experiment with her line-up, giving several reserves a chance to see game action.“It was nice to be able to sub in and give them some playing time,” Smith said.The Lady Panthers face a test Thursday (tonight) when the Cody Fillies invade the Panther gym. Although Powell has faced Cody in tournament action the past two weekends, this will be the first regulation match between the cross-county rivals.The match is additionally important as the first conference match of the season, and Smith said it is an important one if the Lady Panthers are to repeat as the top seed from the north.“Cody is probably our main competition, and they are improving,” Smith said.Given the combination of homecoming spirit and the Cody-Powell rivalry, a large noisy crowd is expected for the match, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Freshman and JV matches will precede the varsity beginning at 4 p.m.
