The Homesteader Museum is set to open the gallery exhibit Soul Nourishment in the Powell Valley, highlighting the First Five Churches in Powell, from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday.
The exhibit highlights the development of the first five church buildings as our town was being established in 1909. “The Presbyterian, Catholic, Baptist, and Episcopalian denominations are represented by thriving congregations and all have splendid church edifices in town. The Methodist people maintain a Sunday-school and hold occasional services at Fairview schoolhouse, three miles southwest of Powell,” wrote The Powell Tribune, Sept. 8, 1911. The exhibit will be on display in the museum’s gallery until the end of the year, closing on Dec 31.
Along with the exhibit reception will be a celebration of the Homesteader Museum’s first 55 years. The Homesteader Museum’s first board of directors was elected and formed on Nov. 23, 1968. The Homesteader Museum Association was incorporated seven weeks and five days earlier on Sept. 30, 1968.
