Cooley breaks 1600 record

Home field advantage paid off for the Powell Panther girls’ track team, as the Panthers pushed ahead of the field at the L.A. Kohnke Invite on Saturday in Powell with 183.5 points, which included junior Kinley Cooley breaking another school record.

That broken record came in the 1600 meters, as Cooley finished in second with a 5:26.39 but broke the previous record by .02 seconds, which was set by Katie Thiel in 2006.

She now holds the indoor and outdoor records in the 1600 and 3200, in addition to the Powell High School cross country record.

Event winners for the Panthers included Waycee Harvey winning the 200 (26.52) and the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet even.

Katie O’Brien claimed the top spot in the shot put (39-10) as the other individual event winner.

The one relay victory for the Panthers came from the team of Kinley and Karee Cooley, Brynn Hillman and Kenna Jacobsen, who won the 4x800 with a time of 10:14.09 and earned a spot at the state meet with their time.

Other top three finishes for the Panthers included Jacobsen taking second in the 800 (2:26.53); Kinley Cooley second in the 3200 (12:42.44); Lauryn Bennett second in the pole vault (10-0) and 300 hurdles (50.52); Paige Sanders second in the triple jump (32-9 1/2); O’Brien second in the discus (108-1); Karee Cooley third in the 1600 (5:45.42); Salem Brown third in the 3200 (15:06.53); Harvey third in the long jump (15-7 1/2) and Addy Thorington third in the triple jump (32-7).

Powell finished the day with 183.5 points, 11 ahead of Park County opposition Cody and 71.5 points ahead of Worland in third with no other team scoring over 100 points.

The Panther girls were paced in the distance events, with the team placing 2-8 in the 1600 along with two top eight finishes in both the 800 and 3200.

Powell also picked up key points in the triple jump after taking the top three spots.

The Panthers will head out on the road the rest of the year but stay close to home, starting with a trip to Lovell on Saturday to take part in its invitational.

A select group will then head to the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper next weekend on Friday, April 26, which will feature the top athletes in every event regardless of classification, with the Panthers also making the trip to Rocky Mountain on April 27.
