Firefighters flare-up the Fourth

Posted

Once again, Powell Volunteer Fire Department firefighters will celebrate the Fourth of July with a fireworks show sure to knock everybody's socks off, with an explosive $9,000 arsenal, thanks to the community's financial support.“It will start at 10 p.m.,” said fireman Sam Rodriguez, who is organizing the annual show with fireman Tracy Sweet.

As always, firefighters will solicit funding for next year's show around town this week and prior to the big blowout Sunday night.

“No donations are too small,” said Sweet, “it all adds up.”

To see the Independence Day show, head east on South Street (Lane 9) and take a right on Road 7, just before the cemetery.

Residents are asked to leave their fireworks at home and enjoy the show. Unauthorized fireworks pose both a hazard to fellow spectators and the firefighters, Sweet said.

The department will enforce the ban on spectator fireworks, said Assistant Chief Mike Meeker.

“Plus, it is the city of Powell's property and they must have a fireworks permit, which we do,” Rodriguez said.

Residents are encouraged to enjoy their own celebrations, but to be safe.

Always supervise children around fireworks, Meeker said.

People have lost hands and their lives from fireworks. Even sparklers can severely burn skin, Meeker said.

If a bottle rocket or some other explosive device causes a fire, dial 911.

“If they need us,” Meeker said, “call us.”

“If fireworks get out of hand at home, don't hesitate to call 911 for help,” Rodriguez said. “The sooner you do, the sooner we can get there to help.”
