As they have for the past six years, Powell High School’s staff and student body will hold a special observance for Veterans Day this week.
This year’s program, though, has been moved up a day to Thursday, Nov. 10, since a large part of the PHS student body and many staff will be in Laramie on Friday to support the Powell Panther football team in the state championship.
All veterans are invited to attend the program at 10 a.m. in the Powell High School auditorium. They will be escorted into the auditorium by students and the PHS band’s drum corps. Both the band and the concert choir will perform, along with other presentations by the students. The flag will be honored with a presentation, and there will be a moment of remembrance for prisoners of war and those missing in action. The program will conclude with a traditional salute by a rifle squad and the playing of “Taps.”
Possibly the most important part of the morning will follow the program, when Powell High School students mingle with the veterans before returning to their classes, giving them a chance to thank them personally for their service.
The annual event, established in 2006 by PHS principal Bill Schwan, has become a fixture in the Powell High School curriculum. It provides an opportunity for students to literally touch hands with a part of American history and the individuals who played an important role in that history. Every year, a large group of veterans attends, giving the students a hint of the scope of the sacrifices that have been made on behalf of the nation.
Powell High School and Schwan are to be commended for the program reminding veterans that their sacrifices are appreciated and for teaching students about those sacrifices in a personal way.
We hope all veterans and many community members will attend the program Thursday to help educate the new generation about our history and to receive thanks for their part in it.
