Every fall in mid-to-late October the irrigation districts in the Cody/Powell area shut down the water flow into their canals. As this happens, fish are trapped in the decreasing water flows. The East Yellowstone Chapter of Trout Unlimited uses electroshocking equipment to safely rescue those fish and transport them back to our rivers and lakes. But the chapter needs volunteers to help rescue as many fish as possible — most years 4,000 or more trout are rescued.
You can volunteer to help with any number of jobs from netting the fish, to carrying buckets of fish back to oxygenated tanks, to counting the fish. The anticipated start of the rescue is about Oct. 18 and continue until about Oct. 29. Timing depends on irrigation district schedules, number of volunteers and the weather.
