Break 4x100 relay record

Another beautiful day led to strong performances for the Powell Middle School Cub girls’ track and field team on Saturday in Lovell — where the seventh grade girls won the team title and broke the Cub’s school 4x100 relay record, and the eighth grade girls finished third in a crowded field at the top.

Individually the Cubs had three winners, with Kindyle Floy winning the 100 meters (14) and the high jump clearing 4 feet, 4 inches, and Abigail Visocky winning the 200 meter hurdles (33.78).

The highlight of the day came from the 4x100 relay, where the team of Visocky, Addie Brown, Autumn Kidd and Floy won in a school record time of 55.66 seconds.

That broke the previous school record by 0.6 seconds which was set in 1987.

“It was great to see all their hard work pay off this weekend,” coach Zach Coombs said. “Coach [Amanda] Haney worked with all the girls on their starts and exchanges and the extra work with the girls did pay off.”

Overall the Cubs finished with 150 points, 16 ahead of hosts Lovell and 33 ahead of third place Cody in a tight, three team race.

On the eighth grade side there were no individual or relay wins for the Cubs, but a deep team effort helped the Cubs (107) finish comfortably in third behind winners Lovell (141) and second place Cody (139).

The Cubs had three second place finishes on the day, with Ashlee Jacobsen second in the 200 meters (30.26), Eleasah Horsley second in the 800 meters (2:42.12) and Karee Cooley second in the 1600 meters (5:46.28).

Powell got a strong effort from Leah Graham — who finished with a quartet of third place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles (18.5), 200 meter hurdles (33.64), shot put (26-9 1/2) and discus (81-0).

“Coach [Adrienne] Harvey does a great job with the hurdlers,” Coombs said. “The girls have worked hard to improve and push themselves each week. Leah Graham is such a multi-talented athlete being able to hurdle and throw.”

Powell now heads on the road to take part in the conference meet in Thermopolis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“Each grade and division has a shot to win,” Coombs said. “The kids have worked this year and their hard work is paying off.”

Those who have qualified will have their season continue and have the opportunity to prove they belong at the top next week, with the Best of the Best Meet starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Lander.
