Cub girls show growth at Cody Invite

Posted

After a week off due to weather canceling a meet, the Powell Middle School girls’ track teams showed improvement in the second meet of the year, with the seventh-grade team finishing second and the eighth-grade team finishing third in Cody on Saturday.

Leading the way for the seventh grade team was Kindyle Floy, who won the 100 meters (13.99), 200 meters (29.49), and also placed second in the 400 meters (1:08.8) and high jump clearing 4 feet, 2 inches. All of Floy’s races were qualifying standards for the Best of the Best meet to end the season.

Autumn Kidd was the other Cub with an individual victory on the day, winning the high jump (4-2) just ahead of Floy on jumps.

The 800 medley relay team of Mareli Corro, Abree Haney, Claire Hultgren and Illy Williams won with a time of 2:48.11.

Abigail Visocky finished fourth in the 200 meter hurdles (35.54) and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (19.71) to earn qualifying times in each event.

Shai Hite placed third in both throwing events, earning qualifying marks in the shot put (22-4) and the discus (64-9 1/2).

For the eighth grade girls, Karee Cooley had the highest finish on the day — taking second in the 800 meters (2:47.33) and the 1600 meters (5:56.06) to earn a qualifying time in both events.

Eleasah Horsley and Ashlee Jacobsen earned qualifying times in the 400 meters — with Horsley placing second (1:07.75) and Jacobsen placing fourth (1:07.91).

Leah Graham reached qualifying standards in both hurdle events, finishing third in the 200 hurdles (34.26) and seventh in the 100 hurdles (19.85).

Graham also got qualifying marks in both throwing events, placing third in the shot put (25-8) and second in the discus (83-3 1/2) — Maddie Valdez was the final Cub to earn a qualifying mark after placing fourth in the discus (70-8 1/2).

“The girls are continuing to work hard,” coach Zach Coombs said. “Hopefully we will see more and more girls make it to the Best of the Best.”

Powell had a dual in Cody delayed this week, but is expected to be rescheduled for next week. The teams will head to Cowley this weekend to take place in the Rocky Mountain Invite starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
