Cub girls impress at Rocky Invite

Posted

A quick trip to Cowley on Saturday produced strong results for the Powell Middle School girls’ track and field team, with the eighth-grade and seventh-grade girls putting in top performances at the Rocky Mountain Invite.

Leading the way for the eighth grade squad was Eleasah Horsley, who had two of the team’s three victories — winning the 800 meters (2:43.15) and the 1600 meters (6:03.03).

“Eleasah is a workhorse,” coach Zach Coombs said. “She pushes herself beyond her limits every practice.”

The other Cub victor on the day was Ashlee Jacobsen, who put in a winning performance in the 400 meters (1:07.81).

Leah Graham had a consistent day for the Cubs, earning second place in the 100 meter hurdles (18.71), 200 meter hurdles (33.58), discus (80 feet) and the shot put (26-8 1/2).

Overall the eighth grade girls had 10 top-three performances in Cowley, with 11 Best of the Best qualifying marks — including four in the discus.

Kindyle Floy had another strong day for the seventh grade squad, claiming first place in the 100 meters (13.52), 400 meters (1:04.9) and high jump (4-2).

Abigail Visocky had two first place finishes, winning the pole vault (6-6) and the 200 meters (29.71).

Other Cub winners included Macie Velasco in the 1600 meters (6:10.94) and Sam Edgell in the shot put (25-0 1/2).

“It was exciting to get Sam back in the throwing,” Coombs said. “She won the shot and was second in the discus.”

The Cubs also had a strong day in the relays, with the 4x100 squad of Visocky, Addie Brown, Autumn Kidd and Floy winning in 56.4; while the 4x400 group of Peyton Ott, Abree Haney, Joriana Hine and Alaja Love won in 5:23.35.

“The 4x100 is .13 seconds off the school record. These girls are working hard and hopefully we can get the record in the next three weeks,” Coombs said.

No team scores were kept for the meet.

Powell will once again stay close to home this week, heading to Lovell on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for an invitational.

Coombs said he wants the kids to continue improving, and he believes the hard work has been paying off.
