Cub girls battle against Best of the Best

Posted

Wrapping up the 2024 middle school track and field season, the Powell Middle School Cub girls’ teams made the trip to Lander, taking part in the Best of the Best on Tuesday, May 7.

Overall the eighth grade Cubs had a strong day in Lander, with the lone victory coming from the 4x100 relay team.

That quartet of Addy Brown, Kindyle Floy, Autumn Kidd and Abigail Visocky finished in 54.47 to claim victory.

The eighth grade squad earned three second place finishes, two coming from Kindyle Floy in the 100 meters (13.17) and 200 meters (27.14) and Visocky placed second in the pole vault clearing 7 feet, 6 inches.

Floy also tied for fourth in the high jump clearing 4-6, while Brown finished sixth in the 200 (28.45).

The seventh grade Cubs also saw a lot of success on the track, with the 4x400 team of Lynea Christensen, Kaytlee George, Anyston Keller and Kara Sanders winning in 4:48.56.

The 4x100 relay team also finished in second, with the team made up of Addie Gillett, Lucy Ostermiller, Zaphira Paul and Ann Trinh winning in 56.33.

“We have had incredibly talented relay teams this season,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “Securing their victories at the Best of the Best was icing on the cake and an epic way to end the season.”

Individually at the seventh grade level the Cubs had some top finishes, as Keller had the highest placement taking second in the 1600 meters in 5:59.66.

Paul earned a third place finish in the pole vault clearing 6-6 while also earning a fifth place finish in the 200 meter hurdles (33.9).

“Any time you are competing, you are learning. Every athlete learned so many valuable lessons at the Best of the Best this year,” Haney said.

At this year’s meet, additional teams from around the state flocked to Lander due to a meet in Rawlins being canceled, upping the amount of competition from schools that would compete from the 4A level in the future all the way down to 1A level.

In addition to those schools the athletes battled a heavy wind, with Haney hopeful both the boys and girls in eighth grade will contribute at the high school level next year, while the seventh graders will return with strong leadership next year.

“The eighth graders are going to contribute tremendously at the high school level next year, and the seventh graders are going to bring back great experience and leadership for the incoming tracksters,” Haney said.

No team scores were kept in Lander, and Haney added that it was a season to remember for the Cubs.
