County approves permit for small event space

A new event space is set to be built off Wyo. Highway 294 on the edge of Badger Basin.

Park County commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a special use permit for the minor commercial business next to the large swathe of BLM land.

Owners Jamie and Jessie Blankenship wrote in their application they intended the space as a venue for weddings, reunions, retirement parties, team building events, wedding showers, baby showers and other similar events on a roughly one acre piece of land within one of the Blankenship’s large parcels. They plan to include a 1,600-square-foot event space, 480-square-foot lounge space with bathrooms for changing, concrete patio and outdoor ceremony area.

County assistant planning director Kim Dillivan said the owners expect 23-29 events next year, including 12-15 May-August. Events will be limited to 125 attendees, pending fire plan.

The land has been used as pasture land and Dillivan said crop and hay production in the area begins just south of this parcel.

While no one spoke at the public hearing, one neighbor did answer a letter on the proposal, expressing concern about the event space negatively affecting them. Dillivan said the Blankenships own a parcel immediately to the east of the one the event space is on, creating a buffer between the event space and the neighbors further to the east.
