A former director of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Col. Stan J. Warne, 74, died Sunday, Nov. 30 at United Medical Center West in Cheyenne.
Then Patrolman Warne was stationed in Powell in the 1960s and was a member of the Powell Jaycees. He was a charter member of Powell Elks Lodge 2303.
Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the North Christian Church in Cheyenne, with the Rev. Roger Aurand officiating. Interment will be in the Beth El Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Hettinger, N.D. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He had been a resident of Cheyenne since 1976.
He was director of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, retiring in 1981. He was past chairman and on the board of directors of Silent Witness/Crime Stoppers. He was a life member and past president (1978) of the Wyoming Peace Officers Association and Peace Officer of the Year in 1986. He was a life member of the Northwest Wyoming Peace Officers Association and commissioner of the Cheyenne Police Civil Service Commission.
He volunteered with Cheyenne Community Christmas Basket Program and Public Assistance and Social Services. He served on the Governor's Law Enforcement Communications Committee and the Advisory Council to the Division of Criminal Investigation, among numerous professional law enforcement affiliations.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Dot) Warne of Cheyenne, whom he married March 5, 1950 in California; a son, Rod Warne of Gillette; a daughter, Terrie Green of Cheyenne; two brothers, Burton Warne of Casper and Jerald Warne of Flagstaff, Ariz; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bertha Warne; a brother, Robert B. Warne; and a sister, Alfreda Soborka. Military honors at the funeral will be provided by the Wyoming Highway Patrol Honor Team.
